I would use a 0w-30
http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-652-0w-30.aspx They are all good oils, but the Gulf Competition and Redline are the best ones. Cheers Tim

Hi, I am picking up my ZS 180 in a few days. I plan on servicing it asap, I have 6 liters of unopened VR1 5w-50, I got for a previous car and never used. How would the KV6 get on with this, I intend to drive it spiritedly and it has done 90k. Shall I use it or sell it and get some Pro-S 5w-40.

I would sell it and get the Pro S as your car wants a 40 rather than a 50.
Cheers Tim

Hey guys
Quick question, looking to give the MG nice health check next month including fluid change etc. I have in the garage quite a few tubs of Mobil Super 2000 10w-40 semi synthetic left over from my TVR days. Will the MG run well on this stuff? Only use it for normal road driving with the odd spirited run. Oh its a Mk1 ZS 180 manual. |

I've done two oil changes on my facelift MG ZS 180, in the past 16 months using Comma 5w-30 Long Life fully synthetic oil, for no other reason than I was offered it for next to nothing!
Come the end of this year, i'll renew again. I've covered around 10,000 miles in the 16 months and engine seems fine (68,000 on the clock). Would I be better off going back to manufacturers recommended 10w-40? Thanks. |

Hi
It's probably okay for normal road use, but I'd go for a 5w-40 or 10w-40. Cheers Tim

What do you think of standard castrol gtx semi synth as an oil, and for the KV6?

The GTX is pretty basic stuff by todays standards, even castrol dont recommend it for anything anymore and I would not be surprised if it gets phased out in the UK.
For a few extra £ the Magnatec is a much better option. Cheers Guy

Thanks. What's the standard halfords semi 10/40, is it similar to gtx or would you say gtx is better quality?

Hi
I can't say too much, but like with anything, the own brand option is a basic choice. If you want the best for your car, go for a proper branded oil. Cheers Tim

Okay, so would you say 6 monthly oil changes with gtx for example would be better than yearly changes of something much better?

The best option for the engine is to use a good synthetic oil and change it annually and that usually works out cheaper than a couple of changes with a semi.
Cheers Tim

Hi
It's a hydrocracked oil. Don't get too caught up with that though, the vast majority of 'synthetic' oils are hydrocracked and over the years the technology has got better, so in some cases the new hydrocracked version of the oil has been shown to be better than the old PAO version. Also, don't get me wrong, there are still some rubbish hydrocracked oils. Cheers Tim
