Hello Oilman!

Can you please tell me what you recommend for a
MG ZR 2.0 TD, September 2003, 150 000Km (93 000 miles).

I live in Portugal, a warmer climate than UK.

Many of my friends, ZR owners, like the Castrol Magnatec Diesel 10W-40 B3.
What's your opinion?

Thanks, this topic is great!

Hi Nuno

Magnatec is a pretty basic oil, a full synthetic would be a better choice, especially with the higher operating temperatures. Something like the Fuchs Supersyn, Motul X-Cess, Millers XFS, Shell Helix and Mobil Super 3000 would be a better choice without costing too much.

Hi Oilman,

I just picked up a couple of 4l 5w30 fully synth GTX Magnatec.

Would this be reasonable to use in my ZS180?

Also, any ideas on a gear box oil to use. I heard something about MTF94, but its hard to get. Are there many alternatives?

It might burn it at a fairly high rate, but it will be okay to use.

I would go with the Redline MTL, Amsoil MTF, Fuchs Sintofluid or Millers EP 75w-80 as alternatives to the MTF94

While it may not be getting used at a high rate, it's too thick for the engine and won't lubricate properly

Thanks for the help Tim.

I was looking for 5w40 but couldn't find it. I have heard quite good things about the magnatec from friends that have used it, and it was 20% in halfords, so I ended up getting 8 litres. as long as it lasts me a year i'm not too bothered. I only do about 8000 miles a year.

Hi

I would use a 5w-40 synthetic and you will find those through the link below.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XFS, Fuchs Supersyn, Shell Helix and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

You need an MTF for the gearbox and I would go with the Redline MTL, Amsoil MTF or Fuchs Sintofluid. The Millers EP 75w-80 is a good cheaper alternative

MG ZS 180 2.5L V6. Completely standard. Road use only.

I'm pretty sure the owners manual says Mineral 10w/40.

I've heard it's ok to upgrade your oil but you can never downgrade it after an upgrade, if that makes sense. What do you think?

A mineral 10w-40 is the basic option, a semi synthetic or full synthetic 5w-40 is a better choice. You can go back to using a basic oil after using a better one.

Out of these 3 at 5w40 for a road going slightly modded (induction/exhaust). I do a lot of pootling to work with the odd spirited evening drive.

silkolene pro s - I assume this is the best being the priciest, is it worth the premium?
motul 8100
fuchs titan

Can I buy 10L and store the leftovers for the next service in probably 12 months time? Cheers. Also looking at goign back to 10w40. 56K just gone.

The Pro S is the best as it's an ester based oil. The other 2 are good oils and save a fair bit of money. Ideally you don't want to leave the oil open for that sort of time as when it comes into contact with air, the additives in the oil start to break down.

I'd stick with a 5w-40 rather than 10w-40 as the 5w will give better cold start protection.

Cheers

Default Re: Oil Recommendations

Is it the oil stabiliser/anti-smoke thing? It works by making the oil really thick so it doesn't burn off. The problem is that the car doesn't want a really thick oil as it won't lubricate properly. I had a look at one product a while ago and it was so thick that when mixed with a 5w-30 oil, the 5w-30 would in effect become roughly a 15w-60 or 20w-60.

Cheers

Hi

The GTX is a basic option, but it is okay to use.

If it's the Silkolene Pro S (rather than the re-named Fuchs), I can't do anything as it's an old product that we no longer sell. The best thing you can do is put it on Ebay. From time to time we sell off old/damaged oils on there are surprised that they often go for more than the new oil off our site.

What gear oil did you use for the change?

Cheers

Tim

Hi

Yes, it should be a 5w-40 or 10w-40. The 5w-30 is probably okay, but it's likely to burn it off quite quickly.

Default Re: Oil Recommendations

10w-40 is fine, however semi synthetics (all 100% mineral base) were not designed for hard use. The tappet noice you hear when hot could be due to the oil thinning down under heat and stress.

Something like this is ideal and not too expensive http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-60120-gu...oil-10w40.aspx

Cheers

Guy
