Re: Oil Recommendations

I'm assuming 5W40, fully synthetic but...

Could you recommend for MG ZS 180, 2004 reg. done 48,000 miles?
Car has ITG induction and full Janspeed exhaust system with de-cat.
Used for commuting and fast road driving. Can sometimes 'tap' a little...

Thanks!

Re: Oil Recommendations

Hi

I would use a 5w-40 synthetic and you will find those through the link below.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XFS, Shell Helix, Fuchs Supersyn and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

As a budget choice, a 10w-40 will be fine and I would either go for the Fuchs XTR, Shell Helix, Millers XSS or Motul 6100

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-657-10w-40.aspx

Cheers

Re: Oil Recommendations

Thanks Tim!

What are the differences between Fuchs Pro S (£44.99) and Fuchs Titan Supersyn (£22.67) ?? What are the advantages of the Pro S??

oilman 22-02-2012 20:05

Re: Oil Recommendations

The Pro S is a top end ester based oil that will give some of the best protection available and is suitable for competitive use, as well as normal road use. The Supersyn is a more basic synthetic, but for the money is a really good oil. Both are really good options for helping to quieten the engine, admittedly the Pro S has the ester content which is very good for helping to keep things quiet, but my brother had an FTO that sounded like a bag of spanners and when he used the Supersyn, it was a lot better.

Whichever you go for, they are far better than most cars get serviced with.

Re: Oil Recommendations

Hi,

For your ZS we recommend you use a 5w-40 or a 10w-40 you can find plenty to choose from here

5W-40: http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40-engine-oil.aspx

10W-40: http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-657-10w-40-engine-oil.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition.
The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XFS, Shell Helix, Fuchs Supersyn and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

52 plate 180zs.... Bit noisy on start up on a cold morning with 100k on the clock just a slight ticking but disappears almost straight away what would be best to run it on buddy? :)

oilman 22-03-2012 16:11

Re: Oil Recommendations

Hi,

For your 52 plate ZS with that slight ticking we would recomend you use a good 5W-40 it is thinner than the 10W40 and will circulate your engine right from the start up.

Hi,

Yes it would be better to use a fully synthetic oil the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. You can find them here http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40-engine-oil.aspx

I have a ZStd with 80k on the clock.
Just changed out Chevron 10/40 for some Triple QX 5/40 fully synthetic after reading this thread.
I want to move on to some Millers for the next oil change, which do you recommend?

Hi

I'd go for their XFS 5w-40 as their more basic option or the CFS 5w-40 as the best one.

I wouldn't say that, I think they are okay, but I don't know their individual products that well and they are quite expensive a lot of the time.

Re: Oil Recommendations

A good 5w-40 synthetic as the top choice, 10w-40 semi if you are on a budget.

Can you recomend an oil for my ZT K series V6

60K on the clock, probably not had that many oil changes in its life but have a a reciept for two where a forte oil flush was used. Is it bit tappy/noisy at times

I have used 10w40 semi since but have hear a 5W/30 synthetic might circulate better. Would this lossen all the sludge inside and cause a problem?

Cheers

Re: Oil Recommendations

Hi

Ideally, use a 5w-40, it will flow faster from cold so should help to keep things quieter on start up at least.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS/CFS NT, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XFS, Fuchs GT1 XTL/Supersyn, Shell Helix and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

As those are better quality oils than a 10w-40 semi, they will give better protection and may well help to keep the engine a bit quieter (the more expensive ester based ones are very good at helping an engine to run smoother and quieter, but the Fuchs Supersyn also often helps and that is a fair bit cheaper).

Flushes aren't a good idea, they often do more harm than good by being too harsh. If you think the engine needs cleaning out, the best way is to drop the old oil out, put in a fairly cheap oil, then run it for a short while (couple of weeks) and then let the oil out before replacing it with the proper one. The detergents in the cheap oil will be enough to gently clean any excess much out in that bit of time, a flush could loosen deposits that are causing no problems at all. That can then lead to solid bits floating around the oil system.

Cheers

oilman 02-11-2012 20:21

Re: Oil Recommendations

Again, a 5w-40 is the ideal choice for both of those, although if one is getting track use, I'd use one of the top end oils in that.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Millers XFS, Shell Helix, Fuchs Supersyn and Mobil Super 3000 are good, cheaper alternatives.

Hi, I am picking up my ZS 180 in a few days. I plan on servicing it asap, I have 6 liters of unopened VR1 5w-50, I got for a previous car and never used. How would the KV6 get on with this, I intend to drive it spiritedly and it has done 90k. Shall I use it or sell it and get some Pro-S 5w-40.

oilman 27-05-2013 14:58

Re: Oil Recommendations

I would sell it and get the Pro S as your car wants a 40 rather than a 50.

Hey guys

Quick question, looking to give the MG nice health check next month including fluid change etc.

I have in the garage quite a few tubs of Mobil Super 2000 10w-40 semi synthetic left over from my TVR days.

Will the MG run well on this stuff? Only use it for normal road driving with the odd spirited run.

Oh its a Mk1 ZS 180 manual.

I've done two oil changes on my facelift MG ZS 180, in the past 16 months using Comma 5w-30 Long Life fully synthetic oil, for no other reason than I was offered it for next to nothing!
Come the end of this year, i'll renew again.
I've covered around 10,000 miles in the 16 months and engine seems fine (68,000 on the clock).
Would I be better off going back to manufacturers recommended 10w-40?
Thanks.
