Hi guys,

just bought 5W50 Mobil1 for my MG ZS 180... I compared it to 5W40 and 5W50 is definetely better if you´re going hard as I do.

For the hot summers of the Czech Republic yes, but in your cold winters you could do with something thinner...

Re: Oil Recommendations

Just put my 2000 Audi A4 2.5TDI 110kw (I actually had to put in the VW Passat 2.5TDI as it didnt list my car for some reason) into the oil finder and it has come up with:
  • Fuchs TITAN SUPERSYN 5W-40 High Performance, Fully Synthetic, Engine Oil
  • Mobil Synt S 5W-40 Superior performance synthetic engine oil
  • Gulf Formula G 5w-40 fully synthetic engine oil (5w40)
  • Motul 8100 X-cess 5W-40 Gasoline and Diesel engine oil 100% Synthetic

What is the best out of that?

I've been using Millers XF Long Life 0w-30 untill now.

I don't think the 2.5TDI engine in my car is PD.

In that case any of the above are ideal, personally I am a fan of the Motul 8100 Xcess out of that lot.

Re: Oil Recommendations

Hi there,

I'm looking to top up my engine oil, as its running a little low (due for a service right now, but the credit crunch is going to put that back a month, so wanted to top it up as an interim :( )... I

My car is a 54reg ZS 1.8 120+... I do a lot of motorway driving to and from work, so not sure if that counts for anything? :S

Reason i'm checking with you guys, is because i checked the manual and its says 10w40 A2, but then when i checked Castrol’s website, they recommended 05w30 for my car... I also saw on here that maybe i need 05w40, so as you can imagine, i'm confused as hell and dont want to mess up and pop the wrong stuff in! :S

Can i just go out and buy 10w40 and have done or should i buy something else?

Any help would be great!

Thanks,

Daz

Re: Oil Recommendations

If you dont know what is currently being run in the car to top up with a 10w-40 semi synthetic is fine, all oils mix.

10w-40 semi is the basic/stock recommendation, 5w-40 and 5w-30 synthetics are an upgrade.

I have a 2001 ZS 180, has breathing mods and janspeed exhaust. I drive it pretty hard, but not from cold. Done 48k miles, and if I'm honest - I can't really afford expensive oil :(
What should I go for mate?

oilman 14-10-2009 13:00

Re: Oil Recommendations

If you are on a budget a good 10w-40 semi synthetic with regular changes, if you want to go better then 5w-40 synthetic.

If you look up your car here you should be able to find what you are looking for http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-861-car-engine-oils.aspx

I run the same 180, but at 225 BHP.
I only use Shell Vpower Racing 100oct, the car is on Mobil1.
I have now covered over 5000Km's in Poland and through Europe (lots of K's on German Autobahn's ;-). ) The oil is still golden, I have also a fully Syn gearoil, which has made the gear changes much smoother as well.
I would without doubt recommend 0w-40 fully synth, but also use fully synth gearoil, to get the best performance.
On the fuel use side, I am getting an average of 8l/100km consumption on the highways, very very good, around town it is around 10l/100Km.
Just to prove, I drove from Rotterdam to Dresden (German/Polish Border nearly) on 1.5 tanks.
Tyres, I would recommend Marangoni 225/45/17, great at high speed, cornering, wet and dry.

Re: Oil Recommendations

hi, on post 13 you talk about 30 grade engine oil.
I was told 30 grade was used so that smaller holes in the hydraulic tappets could be used eg ford and audi's newer engines although you can use 40 in an emergency and vice-versa.
I have an mg tf 160, 2004 yr and use 0-40 or 10-40 full synthetic, what would you recommend. 7k mls a yr mostly m-ways

oilman 17-11-2009 09:36

Re: Oil Recommendations

5w-30 was originally used by Ford because of tappet issues in the early zetecs, its now used as a fuel economy oil. I believe VAG only use it for longlife and fuel economy, I have not been aware of them using to solve any mechanical issues.

For the MG my choice would be 5w-40 synthetic for all year round use http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Hi,

a quick and simple question. I see that you price match, would that include delivery ?

I can get 6L (5L + 1L) of Silkolene PRO S 5W-40 delivered for £53.31 you want to charge me £66.01 most of the difference is the £8 postage.

Hi there, i would like a recommendation on what the best engine oil and gearbox oil to use in my 2002 MG ZR 160 with 53K?

Cheers,
Troy

oilman 05-07-2010 14:05

Re: Oil Recommendations

Hi Troy

I would use a 5w-40 synthetic and you will find those through the link below.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition. The Motul 8100 X-Cess, Gulf Formula G, Fuchs Supersyn and Mobil Synt S are good, cheaper alternatives.

As a budget choice, a 10w-40 will be fine and I would either go for the Fuchs XTR or Motul 6100

Cheers

What can you recommend for a 2002 120 1.8 ZS with 44k?

Slightly modded with induction and exhaust.

Do a mix of steady driving to work and then give it some welly once its warm!

Been using general 10w-40 semi, Granville stuff i think, but would like to know what would be best.

Re: Oil Recommendations

Hello, i would like a recommendation on what is the best engine oil to use for my '98 MGF 1.8. The engine, which has aprox. 100,000 miles, was a standard 1.8mpi, recently converted to vvc (about 3,000 miles ago). I live in Greece, and it's extremely hot here during summer (35-38C in shade...). Should i use different oil during summer/winter?

Cheers,
George

Re: Oil Recommendations

Hi George

Go for a really good 5w-40, it will be fine in the summer and winter

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-656-5w-40.aspx

Out of those, the best ones are the Fuchs/Silkolene Pro S, Millers CFS, Motul 300V, Redline and Gulf Competition.

Cheers

Re: Oil Recommendations

Many thanks Tim.
could you also please make a recommendation, on what s the best oil to use on a 2007 Hyundai i30 1.4 premium, with aprox. 44,000 miles and for a Piaggio Beverly Tourer 300 scooter 2009 model with aprox 4,400 miles. both in Greece with extremely high temperatures during summer (40C in shade today), still bellow zero in winter...and finally, can you ship oils to Greece?,
many thanks again,
cheers, George.

oilman 09-08-2010 16:35

Re: Oil Recommendations

Hi George

I would use a good 5w-30, something like the Motul X-Max or Castrol Edge will be fine with those higher temps. The i30 is a fairly new car so should have sufficient cooling to prevent the oil being too badly affected by the exterior temperature.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-653-5w-30.aspx?pagenum=1

A 5w-40 synthetic is the recommended oil for the Piaggio and the ones we have are really good quality, take your pick from any of them.

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-781-5w-40.aspx

We can ship to mainland Greece, not the islands, it's a bit expensive though. Hopefully that will change with a new courier.

Cheers

Tim

Hi matey, you may remember the name ;)

I've been using the oil you bulk sold me for the RS Turbo lol

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/08.../Bluey/sig.jpg

Mobil Motorsport 15/50 all used up
Got a Silkolene in the shed, sure it said 10/40 - this ok?

I travel 20 mile to and from work with some 'spirited' driving in there ;)

engine done 115k now, 35k in 2 years!!!!!

btw, zs 180 2.5 v6, std engine, but ONLY use super unleaded fuel of course

Re: Oil Recommendations

I do recognise the name, but that's about it. Actually, just recognising a name is pretty good for me.

You need to check which Silkolene it is. If it's the Pro S 5w-40 it will be ok, but may use a drop of it, the Pro S 10w-50 is a better choice, if it's the XTR, it's a bit basic and the RS will probably drink it.

Re: Oil Recommendations

It is a little thick, I'd save that for the cossie and get a 5w or 10w-40 for the MG. You could use it, but it's not ideal.

Re: Oil Recommendations

just done a change on the 180 and put in my usual silkolene pro-s 5w/40.
its an ester based oil ive used for many years.£40 for 5 ltrs but its worth it.
only prob i had is the last service on car(before i bought it).i had to remove close on to 6 ltrs from the engine.dickheads.:shake:

Re: Oil Recommendations

just did mine today, put in 6b litres of oil just to register half way up dipstick

wootty 25-09-2010 08:47

Re: Oil Recommendations

i put in 5 ltrs and it went to top line on dipstick, started it up and oil filter filled up etc.stopped engine, let it rest for 5 mins and oil level was on bottom line.needed another 300 mills to centre part on dipstick.its a bit difficult to see clearly on min and max as oils clear(obviously).
checked again this morn and it aint moved.so 5.3 litres did it.
