Would Mobil 1 0-40 be ok to use in a standard ZT-T 160 (V6), the car does quite a few short trips as well as alot of high speed motorway driving.

In the classic Mini, the gearbox chews up the VI additives in no time on a cheap mineral so a 20W50 quickly gets to be a 20W40 or less. Go for a better oil with a good natural VI rather than an additive enhanced VI. But, do not use anything too slippery as the gearbox, needs a bit of friction for the synchro rings, and rolling element bearings will slide rather than roll. I have seen a very rapid failure of the idler gear bearing (crank to main input shaft) on an A series which also destroyed the housing around the bearing. What caused it was using an aftermarket additive to improve oil consumption on an older engine. The additive prevented the needles from rolling and they slid and wore flat spots which lead to the damage in short order. It also subsequently caused failure of the differential bearing when the brass cage was chemically attacked and collapsed allowing th eballs to escape and get chewed by the gearbox. It caused severe wear across the engine. SCRAP!

I have used Mobil1's 0W40 since the first service at 12k miles. Now on 76k miles on my V6 160 and no sign of oil consumption, usually good on fuel economy, less wear on start-up with better oil flow and less load on starter motor, too in the cold weather.

Ideal for short and long trips as the oil will be better able tocope with longer runs at higher speeds where engine temperature will be higher. But for short runs that cause the contamination build-up when the fuel/water/acids do not get burnt off, the oil will not be as easily damaged as cheaper oils.

If the car has a fair mileage on already (>60k miles) plan to do two changes within 500 miles as accumulated deposits from cheaper oils will be washed off the surfaces so could block filter/oilways. Not cheap doing it this way but better to be safer than sorry. If you plan to keep the car long term, do it, if not, stick with what you already use.

What diff oil, gearbox oil and engine oil will I need for my ZT260? The car is not used daily, and covers about 5000 miles per annum on long runs.

Goose....

I suggest using a slightly thicker oil for your mini... as the same oil supplies both engine and gearbox.

Otherwise you may find youll have to change the oil every 1000 miles.

My mini has been running alot better since we done an oil change replacing with millers classic (non semi or synthetic).

its 15.76 for 5 litres.

Hi Oilman,

Got a couple of questions for you regarding a ZS 180 Mk2, 20k miles:

1. What is the (OE recommended & your personal recommended) service intervals for gearbox oil ?
2. What grade do I need ? & how much ? [1.6 ltr rings a bell]
3. What brand(s) would you recommmend ?
4. How easy is it to change yourself with some spanners, a jack, some axle stands ? Or is it best left to the Pro's ?

Referring back to your recommendation to the Fire Engineer on 13/07/05:

"2003 2.5L V6 iTg induction, always runs super 97 RON with Booster 1.6 RON, road driving. Current oil Fully Synthetic Shell Helix unknown spec. "

I would recommend sticking with a fully synthetic.

0w-40 or 5w-40. API SL / ACEA A2 or A3

I tried to find a 5w-40 full synth oil for my ZS180. I tried Halfords and 2 independent stockist - none of which had a 5w-40. They said that the 0w-40 would probably be too thin for my car and that it could burn a lot of oil as a result or even do damage. Is this true ?

There was a 5w-40 fully synth Halford own brand, but I didn't fancy that !

Will Mobil 1 0w-40 be okay for my car (ZS 180, Manifolds, panel filter, 20k miles) ?

Yes, 0w-40 Mobil 1 or 0w-40 Castrol RS/Edge will be fine, or drop me a mail to [email protected] as I have plenty of 5w-40 true synthetics to choose from.

The Halfords own 5w-40 is a hydrocracked mineral oil and not a true synthetic.

I have recently had a 2.0L turbo conversion to my 54 Mg105+

I have started using Shell Optimax Ron98 and have noticed big big power differences.

Can you recomend any specific oil?

Its MTF94 which I don't stock but I have a fully synthetic MTF by Amsoil that meets the specs.

Due to the higher amount of VI improvers in 0W40 oils they to tend to initially thin. With longer OCIs, the oxidative thickening can counteract the thinning that intially occurs. M1 0W-40 may be designed this way on purpose so that at the end of a really long OCI, the viscosity is still in-grade, but due to the initial thinning may not always give the best results depending upon circumstances.

5w-40 is generally a more shear stable grade than 0w-40 but it does depend on comparable basestock qualities though.

Redline race oils are probably the most shear stable available and the 40wt is listed as 15W40 and 10wt 0W10, so even their 5W40 road oil will use VIs and will be subject to shear.

In general Amsoil tends not to thin but does thicken, so perhaps M1 0W40 does use a thinner basestock than perhaps others on the market with a higher use of VIs.

You recomended that i used a 5w 40w in my mg zs 180.Problem is i can only find 1 brand called millers that has that spec,is this oil any good.

If at all possible do you think we could have a price list put up.

I have used Millers in a number of both serious power and 'daily drivers' for several years. I use 5w 40 fully synthetic racing spec. Hand on heart it is the best I have used. I will not under any circumstances use a '0W' oil.

I use Silkoline Pro S 5w-40 fuly synthetic in my 180. Simon supplied it next day delivery. It really quietened down my engine on cold start up.

Paul, it's not available in the UK yet the only one we have here is the ester based Silkolene PRO R 0w-20 used in F1 cars and Superbikes.

Would recommend that you look at several quality ones on our website (shop will be up in the next week too).

Fuchs Titan Supersyn SL 5w-40
Silkolene PRO S 5w-40
Motul 8100 5w-40
Motul 300V 5w-40

To name a few that we have.

We have not conducted a test on filters, my advice is always go for a reputable brand.

We supply Purolator and they come well recomend, a good price too.

Have a look on my site at the online reference for which one you need for you car.

Supposed to be good, we dont know for sure so we are having some chemically tested, so I hope it is as good as they say.

In theory, other than extreme applications it should be the same oil available to the general public.

It is the same oil. Millers is a small company producing what I have found to be the best so far.

I keep posting about Millers and thought I should tell you I dont sell it and have no financial interest in the product or company!

I know they might well be rebadged Fram etc but it's a policy I've always had!

-2004 TF160 with X power exhaust and itg panel filter. 10,000 a year road use.

-2002 ZS120 with X power exhaust and itg panel filter, 10,000 a year road use?

Also is it worth changing the oil every 5,000 miles instead?

Millers..........check in your handbook for viscosity. Their 'Fully Synthetic Racing Specification' the best. Despite lower cost it is IMHO the best.
