Hi folks, is it worth removing ang cleaning the KV6 Inlet Manifold??
I am about to buy a ZT 190 with a noisey manifold wheather it be VIS motors or the linkage as yet i dont know!! But is it worth removing the manifold and giving the internals a blast with a few cans of brake cleaner?? the car has done 100k so its going to be mingin in there. My only concern is that by doing so you may remove any lubricant (if there is any) from the linkage What are peoples thoughts on this??? I'v read loads of posts on repairing the VIS motors and the causes and effects of broken linkages, but i dont think anyone has mentioned cleaning the manifold when it is removed!! these faults mostly seam to be caused by build up of oil in the manifold so surely by cleaning it out you are helping to prevent the cause... I am new to the MGR world as my background is mainly VAG and Mercedes but its just a thought!!... Cheers.... Paul.... |

Re: Cleaning KV6 Inlet Manifold!!
Hi Mate
if the vis has gone then above 3k rpm you won't feel a kick,as you normally would if they were working. if the inlet is really noisy be prepared to splash out on an inlet manifold. might be worth bringing a mechanic over to have a look with you before you buy, otherwise you could be looking at spending the first 5 to £600 on buying a fitting the inlet. cheers G MG ZT-T 2.5 V6 160+ |

I blasted mine through with carb cleaner when I took it off to fix the motors. The plasic butterylfys are molded in place from a plasitc of sufficiently different properties not to fuse with the rest of the setup, I very much doubt there is any lubricant added and the fact that the plastics are different is what keeps it moving (like the mixture of brass and steel in carbs/throttle bodies requires no lubricant).
Mine had been replaced according to the service history, I doubt cleaning a manifold will stop it being noisey, mine wasnt even though both VIS motors were U/S. This was 12k miles ago, about 18 months so I dont see it has done any harm.

Take it off and fill it with Meths, give it a good shake and drain/ repeat until no more crap comes out.
However if the manifold is rattling bad then no amount of cleaning is going to make any difference. If you have to buy a new one try landrover spares dealers 1st as they are often a lot cheaper.

I realise that cleaning it wont fix it if it is knackered, what i meant was is it worth taking the inlet off as part of a service to get rid of any build up! it cant be that big a job...
Since the original post i have bought the car...its mint!! but the inlet is NOISEY!! sounds just like a worn cam lobe but i am assured it is the VIS motors/inlet manifold. The noise kind of comes and goes up and down the rev range and i get the 3k kick say 1 in 10 times! does this sound like the correct diagnosis???... Going to get stuck in tomoz morning and find out what is wrong!! Cheers.... Paul.. |

Got stuck in today!! took the VIS motors out and fitted donors noise is better but still there...looks like its a full manifold!!....******
Cant believe how much it sounds like a worn cam, i was 100% certain i needed to start ripping into the engine!! fortunatly tho when the Vis motors are out and the engine run it sounds sweet (just pops and farts a lot...lol) On the lookout for a manifold now, its a bit embarassing driving a car that sounds as if its about to blow up...lol Anyone know were i can get a decent used one??? Can't see that's a problem as there is nothing in there to get harmed by meths really. But carb cleaner is as good as anything and theres no real need to soak it overnight.

I dont think it matters.
I've cleaned the PCBs with brake cleaner and no negative effects.

when I replaced my manifold I ripped the old one apart just to have a look, the linkage etc do have liberal amounts of grease over them, so personally I wouldn't be flushing it out with anything, if its on the way out that would only make it wear out quicker imho.

Thats a fair point. Was just thinking what with the oil getting in there and causing a fail I was thinking of flushing out but at the same point I think oil going in there is only gonna keep things nice and loose and free moving. Its only when the oil gets to the motors....Is there no way we can make better seals around the motors to stop nasty things getting in there and causing it to fail?
